Remote and Hybrid Tech Hiring: Evidence for Team Design

US technology employers do not need to guess about remote work anymore. Federal labor data and major work-from-home research show that telework remains unusually common in computer occupations, while hybrid has become the dominant structured model for full-time employees.

Remote tech hiring is no longer a fringe strategy in computer occupations

For US technology employers, the strongest evidence starts with occupation-level labor data rather than anecdotes. In the Bureau of Labor Statistics household survey for the July 2026 reference week, 6.748 million people in computer and mathematical occupations were at work, and 4.214 million of them teleworked or worked at home for pay. That equals 62.5% of workers in the occupation group who worked during that reference week.

That same BLS table also shows the internal mix of remote work in the occupation: 26.4% teleworked some hours and 36.1% teleworked all hours, while 37.5% did not telework or work from home for pay. For employers hiring software engineers, cloud specialists, data talent, AI professionals, or technical product staff, the practical implication is clear: a large share of the addressable labor market is already accustomed to some form of remote work.

This measure has limits that matter for team design. The BLS series is not seasonally adjusted, covers only people who were actually at work during the reference week, and classifies occupation by a worker’s main job. Still, it is one of the clearest current signals that remote tech hiring remains a mainstream feature of the US technology labor market rather than an exception.

Employers should separate telework prevalence from telework eligibility

A common hiring mistake is to treat 'people who worked remotely' and 'jobs that allow remote work' as if they were the same statistic. They are not. On the BLS Occupational Requirements Survey fact sheet for computer and mathematical occupations, 62.8% of jobs routinely allowed telework, while 37.2% did not.

That figure is close to the 62.5% weekly telework rate reported in the household survey, but the two numbers answer different questions. One describes a job requirement or workplace practice; the other describes what workers actually did in a specific reference week. Recruiters and hiring managers should keep the distinction intact when designing policy, drafting job descriptions, or benchmarking the market.

If a role family routinely allows telework at the occupational level, employers can cast a wider net with more confidence. But if leadership wants people on site for particular workflows, it should present that as a deliberate operating choice, not as a claim that remote work is unusual in technology occupations.

Hybrid is the central operating model, not fully remote work

Evidence on full-time employees points to hybrid as the biggest structured category in the broader labor market. WFH Research's combined January through December 2025 Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes found that 27% of full-time wage-and-salary employees were hybrid, 12% were fully remote, and 61% were fully on site.

For employers, that split has two immediate implications. First, remote tech hiring should not be framed only as a choice between five days in the office and fully distributed work. Hybrid sits between those models and appears to be the larger labor-market pattern. Second, companies competing for software and product talent may benefit from treating hybrid as a core design option rather than a temporary compromise.

The same research estimated that about 27% of paid full workdays were worked from home in December 2025. That paid-day lens is different again from the BLS weekly telework status measure, but together the datasets point in the same direction: work from home remains embedded in how many skilled employees organize their working week. For recruitment messaging, that supports precise language such as remote-friendly, hybrid by team, or location-flexible, instead of overstating the availability of fully remote jobs.

Geography expands access, but not evenly

Remote and hybrid policies can broaden labor access across US markets, but the opportunity is not distributed evenly. Census reporting on 2023 American Community Survey data shows that 13.8% of US workers usually worked from home in 2023, down from the 2021 peak but still far above the 5.7% recorded in 2019. The Census Bureau also reported more than 22 million home-based workers in 2023, versus about 9 million in 2019.

Census examples also show that the composition of home-based work differs by place and workforce characteristics. In Bronx County, New York, 39.3% of home-based workers were in management, business, science, and arts occupations, compared with 27.6% of all workers. That does not measure software-specific remote rates, but it does reinforce a broader pattern: work from home is more concentrated in knowledge-intensive occupational groups.

Recruitment leaders should use this kind of geography evidence carefully. Census 'usually worked from home' is not directly comparable with weekly BLS telework status or with paid-day estimates from work-from-home research. It is best used to inform market selection, workforce planning, and candidate access by region, while avoiding unsupported claims about causation, productivity, or individual worker readiness.

What this means for software, cloud, data, AI, and product teams

For US technology companies, the evidence supports a practical hiring stance. If the role sits inside computer and mathematical occupations, remote work is common enough that insisting on a narrow commuting radius may shrink the candidate pool unnecessarily. That is especially relevant in software engineering, cloud infrastructure, data, AI, and adjacent technical product functions that compete in national labor markets.

The same evidence also argues against simplistic messaging. Most full-time workers are not fully remote, and not every technical role should be. Employers are usually better served by describing the operating model clearly: fully remote where the work design supports it, hybrid where collaboration patterns benefit from periodic in-person time, and on site where the role genuinely requires physical presence.

For candidates, clarity works in the same way. A credible job ad should explain whether remote work is routine, how often in-person attendance is expected, and whether the company hires nationally or within defined states or metro areas. In remote tech hiring, labor-market credibility increasingly comes from precise team design rather than broad promises.

The evidence for remote tech hiring in the United States is strongest when employers distinguish among three different ideas: whether workers actually teleworked in a given week, whether jobs routinely allow telework, and how often paid workdays are performed at home. Across those measures, technology-related work remains unusually compatible with remote and hybrid arrangements.
