A better staffing approach is to define which parts of the platform the role owns and which capabilities sit with neighboring teams.
NIST’s cloud computing framework helps clarify the scope. Its definition covers on-demand access to shared computing resources such as networks, servers, storage, applications and services. For recruiting, that means cloud work is not limited to coding. It can include platform design, provisioning, automation, database support, monitoring and governance, depending on the environment an employer is building or operating.
The labor market signals are strongest in software, security and architecture
Although BLS does not publish cloud-specific job counts in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the closest occupation groups point to healthy demand in core cloud-adjacent fields. Software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers are projected to grow 15 percent from 2024 to 2034, with about 129,200 openings per year on average. Software developers had a median annual wage of $133,080 in May 2024.
Information security analysts show even faster projected growth at 29 percent over 2024 to 2034, with about 16,000 openings per year and a median annual wage of $124,910 in May 2024. For cloud employers, that is an important signal because security work is embedded in modern platform design and operations rather than fully separable from them.
Computer network architects are projected to grow 12 percent, with about 11,200 openings per year and a median annual wage of $130,390. Computer systems analysts are projected to grow 9 percent, with about 34,200 openings per year. Together, those occupation-level trends support a hiring plan that values application engineering, platform architecture and systems design alongside pure administration.
Security and accountability should shape cloud engineer hiring
Security is not a side requirement in cloud environments. NIST guidance on public cloud use says organizations cannot hand off accountability for security and privacy to a provider. Employers still need people who can plan controls before implementation, assess whether services meet organizational requirements and remain accountable for data and applications after deployment.
CISA reinforces the same operating model. Its cloud security architecture describes shared risk across secure migration, building the environment and monitoring it over time. In practical hiring terms, that means cloud platform roles should be scoped for secure configuration, identity and access management, logging and telemetry, vulnerability response and ongoing posture management.
For SaaS environments, CISA also notes that customers remain responsible for securely configuring their applications and collecting relevant logs and telemetry, while providers secure the underlying platform. That is a strong argument for hiring cloud talent with operational security judgment, not only infrastructure credentials.
The occupational mix is shifting from traditional administration toward platform design
Employers planning future cloud teams should pay attention to how adjacent occupations are changing. Network and computer systems administrators are projected to decline 4 percent from 2024 to 2034, even though BLS still expects about 14,300 openings per year on average. Their median annual wage was $96,800 in May 2024.
By contrast, network architects are projected to grow 12 percent over the same period, and computer and information systems managers are projected to grow 15 percent, with about 55,600 openings per year and a median annual wage of $171,200. Database administrators and architects are projected to grow 4 percent, with about 7,800 openings per year, while database architects had a median annual wage of $135,980 in May 2024.
These figures do not prove a cloud-specific cause, and they should not be presented as direct forecasts for cloud jobs. But they do support a sensible recruitment interpretation: employers may need fewer narrowly defined administrators and more professionals who can design, automate, govern and scale shared platforms.
How US employers can turn market evidence into a hiring plan
A disciplined cloud engineer hiring plan usually starts with work decomposition rather than title inflation. Separate the recurring needs of your environment into platform engineering, application engineering, cloud security, data platform support, architecture and people leadership. Then decide which responsibilities can be combined and which require distinct specialists.
Use labor-market evidence to calibrate expectations. Software, security and IT management occupations all show faster-than-average growth in the current BLS cycle, which suggests competition for experienced talent is likely to remain real. At the same time, the broader computer and information technology occupational group is projected to have about 317,700 openings per year on average from 2024 to 2034, with a median wage of $105,990 compared with $49,500 for all occupations. Employers that want to compete should align compensation, scope and advancement paths with the complexity of the work.
For candidates, the lesson is equally practical. The most resilient cloud profiles are usually cross-functional: strong engineering fundamentals, fluency with automation, comfort with data and systems, and a clear understanding of security accountability in shared cloud environments. For employers, those are the profiles worth planning for early rather than trying to assemble under deadline pressure.

The best workforce plans reflect that cross-functional reality, use BLS occupation data carefully and build in the security accountability that NIST and CISA describe.
